The State Fair of Texas: Sept.26 – Oct.19

It’s back! The State Fair of Texas: A Great Texas Tradition returns Friday, September 26! The State Fair is one of the Metroplex’s best events for the fall. There is really something for EVERYONE at the State Fair! Live music at the Chevy Main Stage, an auto show for car and truck lovers, a Midway for the kids, shopping, and 2014 Big Tex Choice Award winning food like the Fried Gulf Shrimp Boil!

The Chevy Main Stage has a great line up this year that includes Kyle Park and Kool & The Gang! You can check out the full Chevy Main Stage line up here. The best part about the Chevy Main Stage Entertainment is that it is included with your Fair admission!

If live music isn’t your thing, don’t worry the State Fair has plenty of other entertainment options for you! The Pan-Am Arena hosts 3 of the most popular Fair attractions, Jump! The Ultimate Dog Show, Pig Races, and Ostrich Races. These shows are held daily, check your fair guide for specific times.

Thrill seekers won’t want to miss the BMX Bike Stunt Show! This group of all-star stunt riders perform their daring tricks on four different ramps that are set up next to the crowd. Over by the Auto Show exhibits, your family will find the MAPAPA African Acrobats! These acrobats are sure to wow your family with their balance abilities and amazing acrobatic stunts.

Wind down your evening by taking in one of the two night shows at the Fair. The Starlight Parade features fun floats, creative costumes, and lively characters making their way through the fair grounds. The water and laser show, Illumination Sensation, is located on the 700 ft. esplanade reflecting pool. Both of these nighttime shows are wonderful ways to end your day at the State Fair.

Food and Drinks

Honestly, we could devote an entire post to the tasty treats of the State Fair, but for today we will keep it simple and try to contain ourselves. The State Fair of Texas is known for the Big Tex Choice Award competition for the Most Creative and the Best Tasting Fair dish. This year’s top honor of Best Tasting goes to Clint Probst for his Fried Gulf Shrimp Boil and Justin Martinez took home the award for Most Creative with his Original State Fair Brew- Funnel Cake Ale. Be sure to check out all of the Big Tex Choice contestants and see if you would have made the same call the Judges made! Don’t forget to check out the Beer and Wine gardens for a nice place to relax while sipping on the perfect chilled beverage! There is plenty to snack on at the State Fair, so take your time and share with a friend! If all else fails, you can always come back again!

Auto Shows and Chevy Ride and Drive

It’s no secret that our family loves visiting the auto show at the State Fair! We love looking at the latest models from the different manufacturer’s and comparing the features and benefits of different vehicles. This year we are looking forward to paying a visit to the Chevy models that will be out on display including the 2015 Chevrolet Stingray and the 2015 Colorado Z71. We haven’t seen the Chevy Colorado in a few years and we are very excited to see what has changed on the 2015 model. Along with the Stingray and the Colorado, the 2015 Chevy Trax and the 2015 Chevy Silverado HD High Country will be in attendance.

The one event that our family will not miss this year is the Chevy Ride and Drive at Chevy Park Plaza. Chevy Park Plaza is located northeast of the Top o’ Texas Tower and the Midway and is tons of fun for the whole family! Fair guests, 18 or older with a valid driver’s license can take one of 6 Chevy models for a test drive on a special test drive track! Don’t miss this great opportunity to take a unique test drive and put your favorite vehicle through the paces!

Take your pick from one of these 6 amazing vehicles:

State Inspection Requirements

You know you should get your car inspected every year, along with registering it with the state of Texas (Check Your Date! Love Your State!), but do you know what your mechanic is actually looking for? A vehicle inspection includes a complete safety check and ensures basic road worthiness.

In case you don’t know what your mechanic is looking for, here are the specific guidelines from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The Texas Department of Public Safety lists these 20 point criteria that a passenger car must meet to pass its inspection test.

  1. Horn
  2. Windshield Wipers
  3. Mirror
  4. Steering
  5. Seat Belts
  6. Brakes (system)( Parking- beginning with 1960 models)
  7. Tires
  8. Wheel Assembly
  9. Exhaust System
  10. Exhaust Emission System (beginning with 1968 models)
  11. Beam Indicator (beginning with 1948 models)
  12. Tail Lamps (2); (1) if 1959 model or earlier
  13. Stop Lamps; (1) if 1959 model or earlier
  14. License Plate Lamp (1)
  15. Rear Red Reflectors (2)
  16. Turn Signal Lamps (beginning with 1960 models)
  17. Head Lamps (2)
  18. Motor, Serial, or Vehicle Identification Number
  19. Gas caps on vehicles 2-24 model years old
  20. Window Tint

Once your vehicle has passed inspection you will get a new inspection sticker put on your windshield. If your vehicle does not pass inspection you should have the items repaired and then take it back to the shop where it was previously inspected. You can take it back to the shop for a free re-test within 15 days of the original test date.

Additionally, vehicles in the following counties are required to have their emissions checked every year along with the regular inspection. Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Montgomery, Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, Williamson and El Paso counties.

Our Service Department wanted to remind everyone that there is a 5 day grace period from when your inspection sticker expires! Your sticker will expire at the end of the month and you will have until the 5th of the next month to renew your sticker.

Don’t forget to bring your insurance card with you and try to avoid the first and the last parts of the month, those are the busiest times for inspections!

Paintless Dent Repair

It’s Spring time in Texas which means 3 things to us:  the return of Texas Rangers Baseball, the return of the beautiful bluebonnets on the sides of our state’s highways, and the return of Texas Sized spring showers  hail. As a new car owner, there is nothing worse than the helpless feeling that you get when your new car baby is being pounded by hail of epic proportions.

Fortunately, there are ways to repair hail damage without taking apart the entire car and putting it back together, which would take time and be incredibly expensive. Enter: Paintless Dent Repair.

Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) is an industry recognized repair process that involves the removal of  hail dents or other types of damage from a vehicle’s exterior surface panels without disturbing the finish.

The technique of PDR has been around for several years. Introduced to the North American retail market from Europe in 1983, it has become popularly adopted for commercial use, such as lease return, auction preparation and rental car maintenance. Most recently, the emergence of the procedure as an option in consumer vehicle repair has resulted in a growing interest by the public.

Paintless Dent Removal, is a variety of techniques used for removing minor dents and dings from the body of a vehicle. A wide range of damage can be repaired using PDR; however, usually if there is paint damage, PDR may not be suitable.

The PDR procedure involves the use of specialized tools that apply pressure to the backside of the panel to remove surface imperfections. Damage may also be repaired by bonding a “tab” or other device to the exterior of the panel and pulling the dent from the topside. By using either of these techniques, the technician is able to restore panel appearance, thus eliminating the need for refinishing the panel’s surface area.

Approved by major insurance companies as a viable alternative to conventional hail damage and minor dent repair, PDR is quickly becoming the obvious choice of savvy consumers.
