Texas Two Step: Two Steps, One Sticker

Printable bumper sticker from twostepsonesticker.com

Every Texas driver has heard the phrase “Check the date. Love your state” come through their radio at some point in their life. “Check the date. Love your state” refers to the vehicle registration program in Texas, but recently you may have heard something different on the news and radio programs: “Two Steps, One Sticker”.

“Two Steps, One Sticker”: What’s That?

During the 83rd legislative session, House Bill 2305 was passed paving the way for the State of Texas to stop issuing inspection stickers and transition to a one windshield sticker program. Starting on March 1, 2015, your vehicle registration sticker will serve as BOTH your registration and your inspection.

Alright, one less sticker to deal with. What do I need to do?

Step 1: March 1, 2015-February 29, 2016. Renew your registration if your vehicle has a current, passing inspection. If your inspection and registration both expire in the same month, your vehicle will need to pass inspection before the state will issue a new registration sticker.

Step 2: Renew your registration by one of these convenient methods.

  • Online
  • By Mail
  • In person at your county tax office

When you go to renew your registration, your inspection status will be verified electronically.

How much is this going to cost me?

Keeping with the two step theme, the inspection fee will be paid out in two steps.

Step 1: Pay the inspection station’s portion of the fee at the time of inspection.

Step 2: Pay the state’s portion of the fee at the time of registration.

You will see a handy breakdown of the fees on your registration renewal notice.

Community Matters

We’re feeling pretty bad that we haven’t posted in over a month, but we’ve been really busy with a few other projects around the dealership that needed our attention! Here’s a brief run down on what we’ve been up to this past month!

This past October, Chevrolet partnered with the American Cancer Society to help raise money and awareness in fighting breast cancer. Chevy dealers all over the country participated in the #IDriveFor program where Chevrolet promised to make a $10 donation every time someone test drove a Chevy vehicle. Thousands of people across the country went to their local Chevy dealers and made this October event a success. If you have a spare minute, check out the hashtag #IDriveFor on Twitter and see participation from around the country!

October is a time of year where pink ribbons are everywhere and this year was no different. We made sure that we were dressed for the occasion by putting our pink ribbons on our big blue arch and on our Service drive. We even convinced our Fairbanks Family to wear pink on Fridays.

Here at Chuck Fairbanks Chevrolet, we had the opportunity to deliver a very special 2015 Equinox to Elena, a breast cancer survivor and a great friend of the dealership. Salesman Alfonso Diaz made sure that Elena’s triumph over cancer was celebrated with her very own pink bowtie.

In addition to the #IDriveFor campaign, October brought a new community service opportunity for our family. The Ellis County Music Center approached us to be a partner for their 2nd Annual Food Drive for the Waxahachie CARE Food Pantry and we were excited to say yes to the challenge.

All month long we invited our Facebook and Google+ followers to drop off their donations to the New Car Showroom floor so we could STUFF-a-TRUCK to deliver to the Food Pantry. Along the way, we learned that the Waxahachie CARE food pantry serves about 400 families each month and over 1/3 of their patrons are over the age of 55.

We are proud to say that our Fairbanks family answered the call to help the community and collected over 720 lbs. of non-perishable food items for the food pantry. Salesmen Wes Snow and Scott Scholfield made the delivery in our new 2015 Chevy Colorado to the Music for Meals event on November 8th.

If you follow our Facebook page, you already know that we are big high school football fans. With the regular football season winding down, it’s time to gear up for our other favorite high school sport, Varsity basketball! We had lots of fun helping the Midlothian Panthers kick off their 2014-2015 Basketball season at their 2nd Annual Hoop Madness! Chuck Fairbanks Chevrolet is proud to sponsor the Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball Teams this year! We plan on making it to a few games and hope to see ya’ll there!

The pictures on the Chevrolet website are much more fun to look at and will give you a much better overall picture about the Chevy Trax.

While roaming around the Auto Show, testing out the features of all of the Chevy models and searching for the little Chevy buttons*, a Chevrolet rep gave a brief overview of the Trax which we stuck around to listen to.

We’re excited to experience the 2015 Chevy Trax for ourselves! Head out to the State Fair and check out the Trax for yourself! We would love to hear what you think of it!

*Side note about the Chevy buttons. We found these little buttons in the cupholder of the Trax and on the display by the Chevy reps. The rep told my son, who is 4, that it was part of a scavenger hunt and if he collected all 5 buttons he would get a Big Tex button. Sold. My son spent the next hour looking for the rest of the buttons. Sadly, little brother wasn’t having anymore of the scavenger hunt and we had to leave before he found the rest. I’ll probably have to take him back by himself to hunt for the rest of the buttons! Either way, it was fun hunting for the buttons!

The Redesigned 2015 Chevy Silverado

The 2015 Chevy Silverado is turning a lot of heads in the automotive world and our Sales team was eager to share their favorite things about the 2015 Silverado. These are just a few of our favorite things about the redesigned Silverado, and let’s face it, this list doesn’t even scratch the surface of why we love this truck!

  1. MyLink: USB and Bluetooth connectivity allows you the freedom to stay connected on the go. MyLink uses natural speech commands and has navigation system with 3D maps and points of interest helps take the guess work out of where you are going and how to get there.

    MyLink navigation with 3D maps.
    MyLink navigation with 3D maps.
  2. 3 Ecotec3 V8 Motor: This motor gives the truck 355 horsepower and offers up to 23 highway MPG. This powerful, direct injection V8 allows the Silverado to be the most fuel efficient V8 truck on the road, getting 1 more highway MPG than Ford’s V6 Ecoboost. Visit this page to see the direct injection in action!
  1. 4G LTE: The 2015 Silverado is the next model to double as a rolling WI-FI hotspot! This 4G LTE service is faster, more reliable, and more powerful than a smartphone’s hotspot. It can extend up to 50 feet outside the vehicle, which is great for those of you that like to take your work with you in the great outdoors.

  1. Triple Sealed Doors: Another feature favored by our sales team is the triple sealed, in laid doors. Most trucks have 2 seals between the body and the door, but the 2015 Silverado bumps it up to the next level with an extra seal making the Silverado the quietest interior in it’s class.
  1. Tow Max Package: Even though the ride is quiet and smooth, the 2015 Silverado is still a working beast. The Max Trailering package, which is available with both V8 engines, allows you to trailer up to 12,000 pounds. This trailer package allows you the freedom to haul everything from 4 wheelers to horse trailers. Trailer sway control works with the StabiliTrak system to automatically apply the brakes to both the truck and the trailer if the system detects the trailer rocking. Not sure if you need the Tow Max package? Visit this chevy page   and see what kind of package would work best for your Silverado.
  1. Cage Construction and Crush Zones: Steel pillars, side door beams and a steel reinforced roof all help keep the passenger area of the Silverado safer during a collision. The crush zones have been strategically placed by safety engineers to divert the impact and the energy from a collision away from the passengers. The 2015 Silverado 1500 is the first pickup trick to receive the highest possible five-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety since the NHTSA changed its rating system. Safety is a top priority for Chevrolet and the Silverado didn’t score five stars on accident!

Every customer that driven one has been impressed with the upgrades and the little touches that go a long way! The Vehicle Recall Process

When a vehicle recall is issued by the manufacturer people usually focus on what needs to be fixed on the vehicle and they forget to ask about the process. Once a recall has been issued, the manufacturer sends a letter to the affected customers. This letter has the red SAFETY RECALL NOTICE in the bold, red letters to make it stand out from your regular mail. It’s important to note that these recall letters are customer and vehicle identification number (VIN) specific.

If you have received one of these recall letters, please take your vehicle to your local certified dealership and have them complete the recall repairs as soon as possible.
If you have received one of these recall letters, please take your vehicle to your local certified dealership and have them complete the recall repairs as soon as possible.

Upon receipt of the letter, the customer should take their vehicle to their local, certified, dealership for repairs. Once the vehicle has been inspected, the service department will determine what parts are necessary to complete the recall repairs and then place a parts order.

Once the dealership receives the parts order, the service team will call the customer and make an appointment for the repairs to be made. At this point, it is important to remember to bring your car back to the service department. You would be surprised at how many people bring their vehicle in for service, order the parts for the repair and then never bring their vehicle back in for the actual repair. We try extremely hard to get all of our recall repair customers back to the service department to have their repair completed, but at the end of the day, it’s up to the customer to bring their vehicle back.

Depending on the type of recall, it could take as little as two hours or it could be as long as a day or two to complete the repair. Some recalls are quick and easy fixes for a skilled technician, but others are more in depth and require more attention.

Our Certified Service department works hard to complete recall repairs as quickly and efficiently as possible. Often the longest part of the recall repair process is waiting for the correct parts to come in. This General Motors graphic shows you exactly what the process is for the ignition switch recall, the largest of all of the current recalls.

ignition recall graphic

Now, we know what you are thinking.

“Didn’t they just say that a lot of people don’t come back for the parts they have ordered? So, why can’t you use those parts on my vehicle?”

The short answer is, we could but we don’t. The long answer is when we place an order for parts, that order is VIN specific and is still someone else’s parts order. If we used those parts on a different vehicle and that customer comes back the next day, we wouldn’t have their parts available for their repair. Also, the type of parts needed for the repair might be different from one VIN to the next. We’ve found that the best practice is to order each VIN its own parts package.

I didn’t get a letter in the mail. How do I know if my vehicle has a recall?

If you know your vehicle’s VIN, you can type it in to this form on our website. If you don’t have your VIN memorized, you can find it on your state vehicle registration, vehicle insurance, on the driver’s side dashboard at the bottom of the windshield. Your VIN is the unique identification for your vehicle and contains 17 alphanumeric characters Your VIN will not include the letter “i” or the letter “o”, but may include the number “1” or the number “0”.

The most important thing to remember is that recalls are safety issues that need immediate attention by a certified technician. Here at Chuck Fairbanks Chevrolet, our Service Department runs a search on each vehicle VIN that comes through the service drive. Whether you just dropped in for a quick oil change or you need major transmission work, our Service Advisors will let you know if your vehicle needs any recall repairs.

We would like to give a BIG THANK YOU to all of our customers who have been affected by the recall process. It’s always a little nerve wracking when your vehicle needs work, especially repairs that you weren’t expecting. Thank you again for your continued patience while we work through this process together.

If you have any questions about the recall process or questions about your specific vehicle, please give our Service Department a call at (972) 223-7611. Our Service Advisors are standing by and will be happy to answer any questions that you might have.
